LUMINA Light Festival
Cascais, Portugal
Next event: 12.09.2025 - 14.09.2025
LUMINA Festival of Light returns to Cascais, Portugal, from 12 to 14 September 2025,
with the inspiring theme "Dreams and Stories." Created and produced by OCUBO, a
creative studio with over 20 years of experience in light art curation and production, the
festival transforms the historic center of Cascais into a luminous stage where light unveils
hidden narratives and fleeting dreams.
Since its debut in 2011, LUMINA has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors and
showcased 122 artists from 26 countries, turning the seaside village into an immersive
open-air gallery. Recognized for its innovation and impact, the festival has received several
prestigious accolades, including Best Cultural Event (2013), a place in The Guardian’s
Top 10 European Light Festivals, and the EFFE Label – Remarkable Festival
(2015–2016 and 2017–2018).
The 2025 edition invites audiences to explore the borderlands between the real and the
surreal, with light-based artworks that illuminate the unseen. The town's urban and
natural landscapes become animated canvases for sculptural installations, immersive video
mappings, interactive creations, and live performances by both Portuguese and
international artists.
Staying true to its inclusive spirit, LUMINA is a free event open to all, with a strong
commitment to accessibility and community engagement. Highlights include interactive
artworks, youth involvement programs through school workshops, and a diverse artistic
program designed to ignite imagination across generations.
At its core, LUMINA champions democratic access to art and culture, strengthens the
cultural identity of Cascais, and supports the town’s reputation as a vibrant cultural and
tourist hub. The festival is made possible thanks to the support of the Municipality of
Cascais, Turismo de Cascais, various embassies, and a wide network of international
partners. With a focus on sustainability, creativity, and emotional connection through
light, LUMINA continues to grow as a reference in the global light art scene.
